With 25% of all applications being fake by 2028, it’s clear that the state of hiring has changed, and not necessarily for the better. While AI interviewers are making it easier for fraudulent candidates to pass through hiring mechanisms, it’s the rise in deepfake applicants that’s making the recruiting community nervous. In Gartner’s Q2 2025 survey, nearly 10% of candidates admitted to either impersonating someone or having someone impersonate them, aka proxy interview fraud. And, as previously noted, “this is just one survey with the candidates who have actually admitted to doing this. In reality, the number of candidates participating in interview fraud must be higher.”
To combat the rise in candidate fraud, “recruiters are now running liveness checks on video interviews,” a recent LinkedIn post reports. According to the post, recruiters are asking candidates what the time is, streets that are close to their address, and even to make human gestures like turning or waving. These are not your typical interview questions, as hiring has become anything but typical.
While recruiters and hiring managers are learning about ways to combat candidate fraud during live interviews as the issue emerges, manual interview tactics aren’t scalable. Let’s unpack this problem further before diving into the latest proctoring tools that HiringBranch has released to help recruiters fight back.
Candidate Fraud at Scale
Enterprises that hire in large volumes often rely on automation and AI tools to help them work through the application stack. In practice, this has led to an increase in tools like AI interviewers. While AI and automation allow recruiters to speak to many candidates at once, these tools can actually make it easier for candidates to fake their way through the application process. This will likely get worse as candidates find new ways to cheat AI interviewers.
At scale, candidate fraud poses a more serious threat. While recruitment tech is essential for hiring teams to manage large volumes, it shouldn’t expose the organization to risk in the process. And the thing is, typically, a company that hires in high volumes has more to lose to candidate fraud. For example, a large hiring mandate may coincide with customer service roles that provide access to customer data, creating a risk if a fake candidate is hired. Or similarly, large enterprises can be publicly traded, where breaches have the potential to affect shareholder value. The point is, the larger the organization, the more concerning candidate fraud can be.
HiringBranch Tackling Fraud, Many Candidates at a Time
HiringBranch is well attuned to these concerns and has always offered powerful proctoring features to recruiters. Today, we’re announcing that enhanced proctoring is now available for screening.
To stop candidate fraud, HiringBranch offers continuous video monitoring, flagged events, and playbacks for recruiters.

That means anyone using the HiringBranch screening product can toggle on “Session Integrity” in their dashboard and benefit from automatic warnings about suspicious behaviour. At scale, automated flags are a powerful way to validate the candidate pool without asking them all the nearest streets or the local time.
Here’s a closer look at what the Session Integrity proctoring features can do at HiringBranch:
- Continuous webcam recording
- Face presence detection
- Multiple faces detection
- Randomized question order
- Test versioning
This built-in layer in the HiringBranch product suite is constantly evolving to keep up with candidate fraud as it emerges. To learn more about proctoring at HiringBranch, visit our website.
